ViraCheck is a mobile app that brings your pre-departure checks, logbook, and marine weather together in one place. This policy explains what data the app touches and what it does with it.
In short
The following is kept only in your phone's local storage:
This data never leaves your device and is never sent to us. If iCloud or Google backup is enabled on your device, this content may be included in Apple's or Google's backup, in which case that company's privacy policy applies to it.
We ask for location permission so the app can calculate wind, wave, and go/no-go information for where you actually are. The permission is requested through your operating system's own prompt when you first open the app.
Forecast data comes from Open-Meteo. These requests carry only coordinates and the requested forecast fields; nothing identifying you is sent. Open-Meteo's terms: open-meteo.com/en/terms
The nearby cove and beach list comes from OpenStreetMap data via the Overpass API. These requests likewise carry only your coordinates and the search radius; no account or identifying information is sent.
The list of Blue Flag beaches, coves and marinas is bundled inside the app: this feature makes no network requests at all, and your location is never sent anywhere for it. The list is compiled from data published by the Foundation for Environmental Education; ViraCheck is not affiliated with that organisation.
The cards in the Charter tab lead to partner platforms' regional pages — both platforms where you rent the whole boat and platforms selling guided boat tours. ViraCheck does not sell charters or tours, take bookings, or act as an intermediary.
The ViraCheck Pro subscription is sold through the App Store on iPhone and iPad and through Google Play on Android, and managed with RevenueCat.
To understand where the app needs work, we collect anonymous usage counts. The measurement is on by default and you can turn it off at any time; once it is off, not a single request is sent.
While it is on, the following is sent at most once a day:
In addition, while the app is open, a last-active timestamp is written at most once a minute. It exists to answer "how many installations are using the app right now" and carries no other data; nothing is sent at all while the measurement is off.
Never sent: your name, your email, boat name, MMSI, call sign, your trip notes, port and cove names, your location, or what you searched for. Your logbook and boat details stay on your device.
Records are tied to an identifier generated at random for this installation. It is not linked to your Apple Account, Google account, device serial number, or advertising identifier; if you delete and reinstall the app, the link is broken and a new identifier is created. If you restore your phone from an iCloud or Google backup, the identifier comes back along with the app's data; switching the measurement off is enough to break the link. In other words we count installations, not people, and we do not track users across apps or devices.
The data is stored on Google's Firebase infrastructure in the European Union region (europe-west). Only the ViraCheck developer can access it; it is not shared with third parties, sold, or used for advertising. Google's privacy policy: firebase.google.com/support/privacy
Where the GDPR applies, the legal basis for this measurement is our legitimate interest in improving the app (Art. 6(1)(f)); you can object at any time simply by switching it off. You can turn it off in the app under Boat → Notifications → Anonymous statistics. Turning it off deletes the measurement identifier and counters from your device and stops any further sending.
Notification permission is requested through your operating system's own prompt when you first open the app. Granting it does not switch any notification on by itself; it is used only once you turn on the good-conditions reminder. You can withdraw it at any time in your device settings.
The app uses only local notifications that run on your device (for example, a good-conditions reminder). Remote push infrastructure is disabled in the app; no data is sent to any server in order to deliver a notification.
ViraCheck is not directed at users under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from children.
You can reset your checklists and boat details from the relevant sections inside the app. To permanently erase all local data, simply remove the app from your device.
Turning off the anonymous statistics switch deletes the measurement identifier from your device. If you want anonymous records already sent to be deleted, write to the address below; because records are tied to an installation identifier, you may need to provide yours. You may also ask us to delete the record entirely.
You can manage or cancel your subscription on iPhone and iPad in Settings → your Apple Account → Subscriptions, and on Android in Google Play → Profile → Payments & subscriptions. Subscription records are retained by Apple or Google and RevenueCat.
If this policy is updated, the "last updated" date at the top of this page will change. For significant changes, we will also notify you inside the app.
